Chopin Park spans 9.28 acres in the Portage Park community. The historic fieldhouse contains an assembly hall with a stage and clubrooms used for childhood, youth and teen classes. The park is also home to ball sports fields, a football and soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, an accessible playground and a water spray feature. Together, these spaces give neighbors of all ages room to play, learn and connect.
The History of Chopin Park
Chopin Park was created by the Old Portage Park District, which purchased just over nine acres for the park in 1931 and vacated existing streets and alleys. The site was soon developed with football and baseball fields, tennis and horseshoe courts, and a playground. In 1934, Chopin Park became part of the newly consolidated Chicago Park District.

Polish composer and park namesake
The park was named for renowned Polish composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin in recognition of the neighborhood’s deep Polish heritage. Its Georgian Revival fieldhouse, modeled after those at nearby Shabbona and Wilson Parks, included a 300-seat assembly and banquet hall along with game and clubrooms. Over the decades, the fieldhouse hosted preschool groups, mothers’ clubs, gymnastics, social dancing, crafts, citizenship classes, and community events.
Reflecting the park’s musical namesake, a neighborhood orchestra rehearsed there and performed concerts in the auditorium. Outdoor improvements included a wading pool, sand play areas, and shelters in 1948, followed by a basketball court in 1975. Today, Chopin Park continues to honor its Polish roots while welcoming a vibrant multicultural community.
